![]() ![]() While enjoying some of the various meats the servers carved at our table we were entertained by samba dancers who continued non-stop to “shake their groove things” around the restaurant. Here we were able to again try some Brazilian food and watch and participate in the samba dance parade lead by beautifully dressed authentic samba dancers. We attended this event on Saturday May 7th. For mother’s day my family and I attended the Samba restaurant celebration in commemoration of all mothers worldwide. The place was located on the Redondo Beach pier. I was able to do this at a Brazilian restaurant in Redondo Beach, called Samba. Semba then translated in Portuguese it means umbigada, which means “a blow struck with the belly button.” įor my last Brazilian experience I decided to attend samba dance lessons. ![]() This word comes from the Kinkongo language. The word samba is said to have originated from the transformation of the word Semba. Each tribe in Brazil, in each region, had it’s own version of samba. Samba defined different types of music made by different types of Batuque African slaves in the middle of the 19 th century. One could even say its “hypnotic” rhythms won over those who met the music and dance with animosity. However, it was eventually met with appreciation. Some more modern and now known great names in samba include Ismael Silva, Cartola, Ary Barroso, Noel Rosa, Ataulfo Alves, Wilson Batista, Geraldo Pereira, Zé Kéti, Candeia, Ciro Monteiro, Nelson Cavaquinho, Elton Medeiros, and Paulinho da Viola.ĭue to its roots in African culture it was at first met with some prejudice and discrimination. Some composers of samba songs include Heitor dos Prazeres, João da Bahiana, Pixinguinha, and Sinhô. It was called “Pelo Telefone.” It is believed that with this song samba truly began its spread of popularity across the country. The first true and accepted samba song emerged in 1917. It is believed that this dance is a combination of polka, maxixe, lundu and xote dance moves. Former slaves from Bahia in Rio practiced this form of dance. Samba was developed at the end of the 19 th century through the beginning years of the 20 th century. ![]() It is said that although Samba is a dance form known throughout all of Brazil it was born and developed in Rio de Janeiro. It also associated with soccer in Brazil. Samba can be considered a dance that goes hand in hand with one of Brazil’s most notorious celebrations, Carnival. It is a dance rooted in one of Brazil’s most well known cities, Rio De Janeiro, with West African influences from the slave trade and religious traditions. This traditional dance is among one of the more distinct things people recognize Brazil for. For Brazilians one type of dance is called the Samba. Every culture has its own music and dance that helps define the artistic aspect of its people and their history. ![]()
