I fed it recycler charges (really good grenades that break everything in their blast radius down into crafting elements). On my way to the central base complex, I encountered the massive, deadly “moon shark” in the main crater. And the nicer things aren’t cheap, meaning you have to play somewhat conservatively at first. I’m fond of buying an advanced, silenced pistol and going in with plenty of recycler charges, because lord, Mooncrash ain’t easy. You can use them to customize your loadout before hopping back into the simulation. Everything you do-from finding chipsets or weapons or deceased crew members and their emails, all the way to successfully escaping or completing story missions-gives you points. You'll also unlock weapons, abilities, and buffs (“chipsets,” in the game’s parlance) so you can come in stronger each time.įor a price, of course. Your weak, rookie psychic from your first simulation will have some badass powers by their third or fourth run inside the sim. While item drops and enemy placements are reset after you've either escaped or perished with your last character, your character upgrades are persistent. Trying to get all five crew out on a single playthrough is a stiff challenge. So if your first character in the sim takes too long escaping, the second character will inherit a much tougher challenge. For one thing, you're under time pressure: The longer you stay in the simulation, the more corrupted and difficult the simulation becomes as enemies get tougher and more numerous. Claire Whitten, a seemingly innocuous custodian, possesses a deadly secret which makes her stand out amongst the game's otherwise civilian cast. There are a couple big catches. Then, there are Vijay Bhatia and Joan Winslow, Pytheas' head of security and lead engineer respectively, who also represent typical Prey NPCs. Riley is intelligent and tenacious, with her story objectives having her take steps towards ending the Typhon outbreak just as her cousins do on Talos I.Īndrius Alekna, a volunteer with powerful telekinetic abilities, allows players to step into the shoes of the base game's numerous volunteer test subjects. Riley Yu, the chief administrator of Pytheas Base and the cousin of Morgan and Alex Yu, acts as a parallel to those characters. The five playable characters available in Mooncrash also shed light on some of the characters encountered in the base game. Along with KASMA's rivalry with TranStar, this change of perspective makes Mooncrash act as an interesting reflection of Prey by showing players a new part of the game's universe. Peter's indentured servitude greatly contrasts with the main game's Morgan Yu, a highly respected and influential scientist. The company forces Peter to relive a simulation of the Pytheas base to gather data. In this way, Mooncrash allows gamers to experiment with every ability that Prey has to offer while still ensuring that no single character becomes too overpowered. Each character in the expansion has access to certain skills, and repeated runs through Pytheas give players an ample number of neuromods. Mooncrash, with its five drastically different playable characters, effectively solves this problem. This means that players will be limited to certain abilities over each playthrough of the game, limiting their ability to experiment and explore the game's various mechanics. However, because these neuromods are quite rare, players must either focus on a few particular skill trees or risk stretching themselves thin. The game features six large skill trees, allowing players to spend valuable neuromods to unlock and upgrade powerful abilities throughout the game. Arkane Studios games excel at granting players a variety of tools and allowing them to use these for creative problem solving - and Prey is no different.
